FieldworkThe Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) is a division of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois. The program was created nearly five decades ago and has a permanent staff of 30+ professionals stationed in four regional offices.

The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute (PRI), at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking an Architectural Historian to conduct historical research on architectural resources (standing buildings and architectural remains encountered during archaeological investigations) for ISAS and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The successful candidate will be required to identify and evaluate those eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470) and its implementing regulations (36 CFR 61, Appendix A), and the Illinois State Agency Historic Resources Preservation Act (20 ILCS 3420). This position is based in Champaign, Illinois.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH 60%
  • Identify and evaluate those eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470) and its implementing regulations (36 CFR 61, Appendix A) and the Illinois State Agency Historic Resources Preservation Act (20ILCS 3420).
  • Conduct historical research on standing historic structures and archaeological structural remains to identify and evaluate those eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with various State and Federal environmental laws and regulations.
RESEARCH ADMINISTRATION 40%
  • Document properties potentially impacted by proposed transportation projects by assisting with theproduction of Historic Resources Inventories (HRI), Historic Resources NRHP Evaluations (Intensive LevelSurveys), and Historic Resource Survey Forms (HSRFs).

The successful candidate will have a BA in Architectural History, Preservation, or closely related field as well as demonstrated architectural field survey experience such as, but not limited to, large-scale surveys of corridors, cities, municipalities, and rural areas.  Familiarity with the National Environmental Policy Act, and section 4(f) of the US DOT Act. Familiarity with both print and electronic media sources.  Preference given to those with a minimum of 1-3 years of experience conducting archaeological, historic and historic architectural research and analysis, and report preparation meeting state and federal historic preservation compliance standards.  Demonstrated experience in carrying compliance tasks associated with Federal Section 106 and State ILCS 3420 historic preservation activities.  Must have the ability to report findings in standard academic formats using both digital photography, and computerized word, data processing formats (e.g. WORD, EXCEL, Photoshop, etc.). Proficient in the use of ArcGIS and Historic Architectural Resources Geographic Information Systems (HARGIS).  Familiarity with Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) level documentation.  Ability to provide relevant expertise and advice to IDOT and ISAS leadership as required.  Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple and often rapidly changing deadlines.  Available for occasional out-of-town projects, overnight stays. Must possess a valid driver’s license and insurance.
